ABOUT
The Luna Clock was first developed by me in 1996. Originally titled "Moonage Calculator", it was spawned from me listening to David Bowie's "Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars" album. On that album there is a song called "Moondage Daydream" and in that song he sings "Freak out in a moonage daydream, oooh yeah!". Being the geek that I am, I freaked out that I did not know my moon age, and thusly constructed a calculator to determine it.
That was 25 years ago, and it was up and running until January 2021 when I consolidated my servers into a single account. I decided then, considering I had just launched a new artist by the name of Moondog Wily and I had to do some updates for it to work on the new server space, to build a new and better version of that calculator, and this is what we have!
One of the big changes for this version 2.0 is the graphical user interface. Previously, I did not have the arrows, the dynamically generated movement of them, the better input system, etc.
Some interesting items about the full moon and your birthdate, etc. have been gathered over the years. Here are a few of my favorites:
- You will be 500 moons old at approximately 40.5 years! I jumped out of an airplane for the first time in my life on that day!!! Glad I was attached to someone with a parachute!
- At approximately 81 years of age, you will hit 1000 moons! This is my new goal, to live to be a thousand moons. It just sounds so cool, and I want to be able to say it!
- Most people who live to be approximately 80 years old, will have about 4 full moons that land on their birthday.
- The full moons on a specific date have an eerie pattern. A very large percentage of the time, they are spaced 19 years apart. Sometimes you will have a date (and this is during the 200 years I have data for and am using here) that is only 11 years from last full moon on that date, but it is not common. Other times you will have 38 years, 57 years or 76 years (notice the multiples of 19 here) between a full moon birthday and your next full moon birthday. I just had my third recently, and I will not have another for 38 years. Nineteen years from now, I miss by a few hours having one fall on my birthday!
There are more improvements to come, including but not limited to:
- Number of days before and after full moon that you were born on (aka "Origin Date")
- Dates of past and future full moons on the provided origin date
- Ability to know exact moon calcs - this current method is counting new moons and full moons. I will be updating it to choose to use actual full moon cycles based on your start date. So if you were born 2 days after the first quarter of the moon, you will be able to see the count of moon cycles based on that value as well.
- Data on when you will hit 500 and 1000 moons old!
- Possible drag of arrows to set month day and year
- Optimization for phones and other smaller screen devices
- Download/email of moon history
If you have any suggestions, comments, problems, etc., you can let me know using the form on this page (coming soon). Enjoy the data and happy mooning!
